THE SAN FERNANDO VALLEY RESCUE MISSION

June 30, 2009

Tonight I (along with many others) brought food and helped feed the homeless families who are staying at the San Fernando Valley (SFV) Rescue Mission. While there are four strong rescue missions serving downtown Los Angeles, the SFV Rescue Mission is the only rescue mission based in the San Fernando Valley. The SFV Rescue Mission’s Family Shelter program was created in 2002 in a collaborative effort with San Fernando Valley area churches in response to the critical unmet need for year round emergency shelter.

The SFV Rescue Mission takes in any family who is homeless and provides housing and meals for as long as needed. The only criteria to be “admitted” into this program, is that you have a family. There are plenty of homeless shelters that cater to individuals, and the SFV Rescue Mission is unique in helping keep the stability of the family together during difficult times. They even provide housing for single mothers and their babies.

The goal of the Family Shelter Program is to develop a plan of restoration for each family, based on their needs for achieving personal growth, employment, housing, and public assistance.

Currently, 50% of the guests who stay at the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission are children 12 years of age and younger. (Currently they have several babies staying at the shelter who are under a year old.) Check out my video below to see my experience at the SFV Rescue Mission.

      Hi Jim,
Thanks so much for writing :) We are currently in South America volunteering, so it might be a little hard to get you to help us out, out here :) Thanks for offering though…I’m sure there are many organizations that are looking for volunteers on Thanksgiving! Try the San Fernando Mission…
      Best,
      Alli D. Seigel :)
