THE GOOD DEED PROGRAM #5

February 21, 2009

I was so excited to see Ms. Good’s students today, as I was in NYC last week, and Ms. Good had to run  “The Good Deed Program” on her own. The theme of last week’s good deeds was “good deeds for the environment”, and the kids were very energetic and filled me in on what I had missed.  First of all they created a “Good Deed Flower” that grows each week by adding a  new petal with the “Super Good Deeder’s” name that week.  The “Good Deed Flower” was inspired by a drawing that Emma had done about good deeds.  The flower is such a great idea and I love it!

They also let me know that Tristan was the “Super Good Deeder” of this past week. Tristan and his family took bottles and cans to recycle at the recycling center.  The money they got from their recyclables went directly to homeless people.  Tristan’s classmate, Alexander, was the one who nominated him for his good deed, letting me know that he chose Tristan because his good deed was a great example of “cause and effect.”  I was so happy to hear how involved Ms. Good’s students were getting with “The Good Deed Program.”

Today’s theme for good deeds was “Random Acts of Kindness”.  Olivia explained to the class that “Random Acts of Kindness” could just be “the little nice things you do without planning them.”  This week’s theme was inspired by last week’s “Random Acts of Kindness Week”,  and I really wanted to stress the point that it is very easy to do acts of kindness and good deeds on a daily basis.

The “Random Acts of Kindness” that I heard from Ms. Good’s class today blew me away.  These children are so sweet and so giving it really is such a joy to work with them.  Some of my favorite acts of kindness included Lulu who shared her Valentine’s Day candy with her neighbors, Miranda, who smiled and waved to firemen passing by, Sterling who helped his little brother when he got soap in his eyes, Emma who brought her twin sister lemonade when she had a fever, and Sofie who made a Valentine card for a neighbor who she knew didn’t have many friends or family.  It turned out Sofie’s neighbor was in the hospital when she left the Valentine card for her, and when she got home from the hospital the Valentine card was the first thing she saw and it really made her day.  (Awwww!)  But, the “Super Good Deeder” this week was Declan.  Declan’s act of kindness was very simple and very sweet.  He complimented a classmate on a project he did.  He won this week, as he was a great example of how classmates can make each other feel good with a “put up.” (A “put up” is a term used in Ms. Good’s class as the opposite of a “put down.”)

My favorite part of “The Good Deed Program” today was when I asked the class if they had witnessed any of their classmates doing good deeds or acts of kindness this week.  Every hand shot in the air, as each student had something kind to say about another.  I absolutely love being involved with “The Good Deed Program,” and today was a shining example of how much Ms. Good’s class is growing.

Hi Alli, Your 365 project is inspiring, and has prompted me to do a couple of little things for others I might not have, so thanks for the idea!

For your “animals” category, and maybe something to show the students, there is a very fun live video stream of some shelter kittens in the L.A. area (until the get adopted March 7) … check it out here: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/found-animals

Warning, they are *very* cute, so you may end up watching for awhile. ;)
