THE “GOOD DEED PROGRAM”
January 16, 2009
Today’s good deed fills my heart with so much goodness, I can’t stop talking about it! One of my best friends, Lisa, (or Ms. Good as her students call her) teaches 2nd grade. We collaborated together, and decided to start a “Good Deed Program” in her classroom! Today was the first time I met with the students, and the experience was nothing short of amazing! I explained to the twenty 2nd graders what a good deed is and how I am on a mission to do one every day. They were so inquisitive and so excited about doing and sharing their own good deeds, that it made me incredibly excited as well. The “program” Ms. Good and I created goes like this: Each Friday, the kids will use their journal time to write about the good deeds that they have observed their peers doing for the week. They can also include deeds that they have done themselves at school or at home. Then, they each will share their good deeds for the week with the class. We then pick three students names at random, and those three students then nominate another student who they think should be recognized as the “Super Good Deeder” of the week. They need to give specific reasons why they think their classmate should be nominated. Then we vote! (Such a democracy!) From there, our “Super Good Deeder” of the week is chosen. This student will be recognized for the entire week and he or she will get to be Ms. Good’s special helper for that week. That includes being the line leader, passing out papers, etc. (All things 2nd graders are dying to do!) Not to mention, they get to take home and take care of “Gilbert the Good Deed Bunny”. A very special stuffed animal that helps “inspire” good deeds This program is anticipated to go on for 20 weeks, so each student will have a chance to get recognized. It was clear to me today that children light up when they know people recognize their good deeds. It is our mission with our “Good Deed Program” for the students to learn to recognize what makes a good deed and to look for ways in which classmates do good deeds as well. Oh, and we hope to boost their self esteem and morale while we’re at it!

This is seriously fantastic!
This is great! I am going to print this out and send it to my son’s teacher for her to use or maybe pass on to some of the teachers who have older students.
Wow! That is so great! Thanks for reading and definitely pass it on!!!! Thanks!
Best,

So cool! You did a great job describing the program and the picture is super cute! Look how excited and proud our “super good deeder” is!!! xoxo
I love this idea! I am a teacher too, like your friend, though I teach English in Japan as an assistant teacher.
I’m also doing the same commitment as you: one good deed per day. Nice to meet someone like-minded!
